AUSTIN (KXAN) - The tough economic times have churches around the country coming up with ways to help their church members deal with the current state of the economy.

Austin is no exception. From food and clothing drives to sermons focused on credit card usage, local churches are talking about money and finances. After all, there are said to be some 2,350 verses on money and finances in the Bible.

Following the Bible's lead, local churches are offering their congregations several programs and seminars to help them through the troubled financial waters.

"What the heart of this series is, is to try to get us to look at ourselves and what's our part," said Betty Blake Churchill of Gateway Church. "To what our part is and how we contribute to the economy."

According to the Gateway Church's Web site : "Economic crisis is the daily headline everywhere you turn. It's the backdrop of every conversation. It's easy to debate who did what to get us here."

The church has held two recent sermons on the financial fallout: lessons on contentment and lessons on debt.
